LETS DRAW A SONG

AGE GROUP: 4 – 10 years

GOALS:

• Developing language skills
• Understanding subjectivity of perception
• Learning to find out important parts of information and structure
• Practicing flexibility

KNOW HOW

1) Choose a well-known song in your mother tongue. For English speaking children it could be anything like: Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star, Bah, Bah Black Sheep, Old McDonald etc. For older children we can choose more sophisticated or longer tunes such as The Twelve Days of Christmas or even Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds.

2) Say to your child or children that now you are going to draw, but something really special – not what you will see, but what you will hear.

3) Draw the picture with your children and talk about what you do. Support them in a positive way, but let them to show their creativity and independence. With older children you can make the exercise more difficult, but asking them to draw the main idea of the song, or to make it as a comics if they like.

4) If you have more than one child in the group, let them present their pictures in the end and explain what they made

Try to talk with them actively during the process and afterward as well when they open the issue themselves. You can support the discussion with any questions like this:

• What was the most difficult thing to draw?
• Do you think you succeeded to draw the song precisely?
• Would anyone else guessed correctly what is the name of the song (and you can test this with your grandparents for instance)?
• What have you learnt today while drawing?
